Streets empty, schools closed as IPOB’s sit-at-home order is obeyed in Southeast, Nigeria

Businesses, markets and schools have been shut in the southeast.

A sit-at-home directive issued by the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has largely been complied with in most southeastern states, towns or cities.

IPOB had declared the sit-at-home to press for the release of its jailed leader Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu was re-arrested in June, four years after fleeing Nigeria.

He faces an 11-count charge bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms, improper importation of goods, among others.

IPOB has asked everyone resident in the southeast to remain indoors every Monday, beginning today, August 9, until Kanu is released unconditionally.

Reports reaching the Pulse newsroom indicate that the directive was largely adhered to in Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo and parts of Abia, with businesses and markets shut, school gates locked and banks shuttered.

Social media users have been sharing pictures of empty streets and locked shops from the southeast region.

Some reports say thugs are laying in wait for commuters who dare defy the ban, on eerie bends and intersections.

Kanu’s IPOB seeks a separatist southeastern region that tried in 1967 to break away from Nigeria under the name ‘Republic of Biafra.’

Sunday Igboho reacts to DSS allegations, says he protects himself with traditional powers not guns

Igboho says his means of curbing criminality is to chase the criminal Fulani herdsmen out of their hideouts in the company of the people of the affected communities.

The Yoruba political enforcer, Sunday Adeyemo better known as Sunday Igboho, has reacted to the allegations leveled against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS operatives after raiding Igboho’s residence on Thursday, July 1, 2021, said they recovered seven AK-47 rifles and a trove of ammunition in his house. But in a statement on Friday, Igboho said the guns found in his house were ‘government magic’, saying he only protects himself with traditional powers.

The secessionist agitator who has now been declared wanted by the police said the DSS did not send any prior invitation to him before invading his house.

In the statement titled ‘My Persecution By Buhari Regime: Setting The Record Straight’ and issued by his aide, Olayomi Koiki, Igboho said the invasion of his house was an attempt by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to silence him.

He said his involvement in the Yoruba Nation agitation was necessitated by the failure of the administration of President Buhari to address and curb the incessant killings, raping and kidnapping of his people in the Southwest region.

The statement reads, “The invasion of my home by Nigerian security operatives and the Department of State Services’ (DSS) announcement that I’m wanted has made it essential for me to set the records straight for Nigerians and the international community.

Nigerian security operatives invaded my residence in the early hours of Thursday, 1 July 2021. The invasion was done without a search warrant. I was not invited for questioning/investigation at any government facility before the invasion. The operatives that stormed my residence destroyed my properties, killed persons and stole valuables and money. Pictures and videos of their atrocities have been widely reported in the media.

Nigerians and the world at large are aware of my resistance to the incessant killings, raping and kidnapping of my people in Southwest Nigeria by armed Fulani herdsmen.

“The failure of President Muhammadu Buhari and his government to curb the criminal activities of the murderous herdsmen necessitated my intervention. I ordinarily would not have intervened if the government had lived up to its responsibility of securing the Southwest and Nigeria at large from the criminal activities of the President’s ethnic men.

“Of public knowledge, my intervention has not led to any loss of life or bloodshed. My means of curbing criminality is to chase the criminal Fulani herdsmen out of their hideouts in the company of the people of the affected communities. It is because of the foreseen government persecution that videos of such interventions were transmitted live on social media.

“Nigerians, the security operatives, and the presidency are aware that I have never moved against the peaceful Fulanis and other tribes living peacefully in the Southwest. My unjust persecution –for defending my people and community — is therefore surprising and unwarranted.

After several unsuccessful attempts to link me to any crime, the Buhari regime desperately opt to forcefully silence me, so that the criminal herdsmen, who enjoy government’s sympathy, protection and immunity, can easily outrun the Southwest.“The presidency’s serial antics and desperation to acquire people’s ancestral lands across Nigeria for foreign Fulani herdsmen because they share ethnicity and occupation with the President is well known to Nigerians and the international community. I am being seen as a threat to the Fulanisation agenda in the Southwest, hence the desperation to soil my name.

“Nigerians and the international community should please be aware that the security operatives that invaded my home either planted the ammunitions being paraded in the media in my home or harvest them from their armoury to frame me. The arms paraded are not mine, they are government magic. I protect myself with traditional powers, not with guns.

“Federal government framed me up and the sequence of events brings the truth to bare. Why would the security agents invade my home at night and destroy my surveillance cameras before carrying out their operation if not that they had an ulterior motive?”In this modern age of technological advancement, why did the security operatives not put on body cameras to record their activities from the point of entry to their time of exit? Their action is a testament that the Buhari regime is incurable of using the desperate approach to silence peaceful social interventions.

“The unwarranted military invasion of Lekki, gruesome killing of peaceful EndSARS protesters, and evacuation of their bodies on 20 October 2020 is still fresh in the mind of Nigerians.”A similar approach was adopted during the invasion of my home. The security operatives killed scores and took away their bodies. Buhari’s regime would have declared that ‘unknown gunmen’ invaded my home if they had succeeded in killing me.

”Nigerians and the international community should beware that desperate efforts are being made to force those arrested to make implicating confession statements. I advise the DSS to desist from their unprofessional acts and devote such energy to eradicating insecurity.

”Nigerians and the international community should please note that I am a law-abiding citizen without blemish. I advise President Buhari to, in the interest of Nigerians that voted him to power, order his henchmen to desist from using falsehood and unholy tactics to soil my name.”Such energy should be devoted to taming the herdsmen and bandits freely committing heinous crimes across Nigeria with impunity because their kinsman is in power.

”Yoruba people would not be demanding for a nation if the government had lived up to its responsibilities. Self-determination is not a crime and all efforts to silence us and acquire our ancestral land for local and foreign criminal herdsmen will fail.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIGERIAN GODS OF THUNDER Sango AND amadioha

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIGERIAN GODS OF THUNDER Sango AND amadioha

Sango AND amadioha: a brief history of Nigerian gods of thunder

In African folklore, Amadioha and Sango are gods of thunder to the Igbos and Yorubas respectively. There are many difference between them but many similarities too. They are both associated with aggression and serve as agents of justice.

People who have been accused of crimes go to their shrines to declare their innocence, less they be struck by lightning. Their common colour representation is Red and white, and the white ram. The ram is sacred to a lot of the African thunder and lightning gods, both as a sacrifice and as a symbols.

sango

Sango is one of the ancestral fathers and Orishas of the Yoruba, Caribbean and certain Latin American people. He is the highly reverenced god of Thunder, Lightning, and Electricity who was also the third Alaafin of Oyo. He was a powerful ruler who brought prosperity to his land. He gained his powers from a babalawo (herbalist) when he sought more power to destroy his enemies. He gained the powers to control lightning and was subsequently possessed by the spirit of lightning marking his ascendance into Orisha level. He was also said to breathe fire and apparently never died.

Due to slave trade, Sango is also venerated in Haiti, as a god of thunder and weather; in Brazil, he is known as Xangô; in Umbanda, as the very powerful loa Nago Shango; in Trinidad as Shango god of Thunder, drumming and dance ; and in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela – the Santeria equivalent of St. Barbara, he is known as Changó.

His symbol is a double-headed axe, which represents swift and balanced justice. He is the owner of Bata (double-headed drums), as well as the Arts of Music, Dance and Entertainment in the Yoruba Culture.

Amadioha

Amadioha is the god/arusi (deities)of thunder and lightning of the Igbo people of south eastern Nigeria. He is first and foremost known as a god of justice. He speaks through thunder, and he strikes with lightning. In some parts of Igboland, he is referred to as Amadiora, Kamalu (which is short for Kalu Akanu),Kamanu, or Ofufe. He is revered in the same way a god is, lovingly and fearfully. Metaphysically, Amadioha represents the collective will of the people. He is also considered the creator God and the god of love, peace and unity. His name is used as oaths in Igboland and carry death penalties when broken. It is common to hear someone say, “Chi m le kwee – O wuru si o wu mu mere ihea, amadioha magbukwe m” (My god please see- If it is true that I did this thing, let Amadioha Kill me).

He never manifested as a human. Unlike his fellow thunder and lightning deities, Amadioha doesn’t carry an object of power like Thor carries his hammer or like Shango carries his axe. His symbol is a white ram. From witness reports, Amadioha at times appears to people in the form of a large white ram.

Astrologically, his governing planet is the sun and he is often associated with Anyanwu, who is the Igbo god of the Sun.
